History

From the 11th Century to Today

11th Century

The origins of the Château de Mirande date back to the 11th century when it was part of the imposing Cluny Abbey which had dependencies throughout Europe. Its importance is illustrated by the fact that until the construction of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome in the 16th century, the church of Cluny was the largest sacred space in Christendom.

1500s

Owned by Lords Pierre Bettel and Pierre Puget in 1560, the modest estate was named “Mirande” from Old French meaning “beautiful view”.

1600s

Between 1621 and 1625 the owner was Jean de Buisson. Around 1690 the Château returned to Jacques Bordet, “the lawyer in parliament” and later to his children.

1700s

In the 18th century the lord of Senozan acquired it. In 1789, the year of the French revolution, Mr. Moiro was the owner. We do not know what happened there precisely at this time, however careful examination of the buildings do provide us with some clues.

1800s

A late 19th century postcard bears the following inscription: “Château de Mirande in Montbellet, Saône et Loire, from the stronghold of Mirande (1763), only one tower remains. The current gracious residence built in the middle of a beautiful green park belongs to Mr. Protat, general councilor: who fulfills the functions of sub-prefect of Rethel and secretary of Ardèche and Maine-et-Loire.

1900s

In 1944 Baron de L’Epine acquired the estate from Viscount de Balorre.

Today

In 2011, the Roser family settled in Mirande. It has carried out major rehabilitation and renovation work while strictly retaining its original character. The estate, for the first time in nearly a thousand years, is today a place where lovers of Burgundy from all over the world, meet and and enjoy its history, way of life, wines, Crémant and cheeses.

Since 2018, The Münch family has become hosts of the Château, undertaking additional renovations to improve the atmosphere and facilities for guests.
